the perfect topic

I'm currently in the process of trying to find a research area for my PhD. It's pretty difficult work. The idea I've been fleshing out all morning would be great ... if only the late Victorians had written comedies about imperialist expansion ... which I'm starting to think they didn't.

I know a girl who is studying Jewish History in Northern Africa under French Imperialism. I always thought, wow. What a great topic. Group of people, part of the world, time in history. Perfect. If only there was such a neat format for literary studies!

If you don't get many new photos in the coming weeks, it's because I'm holed up in a room, trying to learn about Gilbert & Sullivan.

Sounds like an interesting topic though. Hope you find what you're looking for!

And thanks, now I've got the theme song from The Mikado bouncing through my head!

Ah, the hunt for an obscure and original but interesting topic. Exactly why I dropped out of graduate school (I was also a Victorianist!).

Would Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray count? There might be something there with the Joseph Sedley character. :)

Also I <3 Gilbert and Sullivan. The Mikado could be useful as I think Gilbert and Sullivan became fascinated with Japanese society during one of those foreign culture exhibits.

I could dig up some relevant historical articles about the exhibits.

I'm envying you getting to pick a topic! :D
